In 1968 I
was fortunate to inherit a very fine collection
of art (which had never been at Stonor) created
by cousin Francis Stonor, largely between the end
of the war in 1945 and his death. Therefore, visitors
may see old Master Drawings and Pictures, a pair
of Venetian globes, the French wallpaper of Paris,
bronze and wooden sculptures, the extraordinary
shell bed and the rugs that were collected by
him.
At my parents' 1976 house
sale I was able to purchase a few important pieces
of furniture, for example, the William and Mary
bed, the Gillow desk in the same room, the desk
in the library, the 18th century pair of cabinets
in the drawing room and the hat stand.
With these, and the portraits
and archives in our son's possession, we decided
to take the considerable financial risk of returning
to Stonor.
