will see the complete range of family portraits
starting in the 16th century. The collection of
family portraits are of great interest first, because
of the length of the family history they cover,
but also because those painted during the Recusancy
period from the late 16th century until the early
19th century show little sign of the sitters despairing
about the harsh conditions of Catholics. Rather
they indicate that somehow they were confident that
their persecution would come to an end.
